Cruel end to Germany’s run
The 2-1 defeat brings an end to host nation Germany’s campaign.
With the support of thousands of fans in Stuttgart and elsewhere across the country, Germany played one of their best tournaments in recent times. Their quarterfinal exit is an improvement from their group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Against Spain, the Germans were aggressive, and relentless and pushed them until the end.
The late winner from Merino was a cruel end to their fate in the tournament.
